At Niagara early tourists dug up bones from the battlefields of the 1812 war13 to bring home. Native Americans soon got caught up in the tourist trade, as providers of the authentic. Here, as elsewhere, the genres of “native crafts” and “local souvenirs” soon became blurred. In 1850 you could buy items cut from local rock and wood, beaded moccasins, bark trifles, baskets, leather cigar cases decorated with dyed elk’s hair, and also miniature canoes.
